Tell us about your background. Where are you from? What brought you to Mpala? Where have you previously studied or conducted research?
I hail from Central Kenya, where i was raised near the Aberdare National Park. From an early age, i was inspired by nature films that sparked a deep curiosity about the natural world-a passion further reinforced by witnessing the human-wildlife interactions and conflicts in the region. Motivated by this curiosity, i pursued a Bachelor of Science in Zoology at Pwani University. During my studies, i conducted a research assessing the risks posed by fecal samples from the Indian House Crow to campus eateries. Beyond academics, i actively engaged in conservation initiatives such as beach clean ups, bird watching and mangrove planting exercises. I came to Mpala to Intern and grow as a researcher under the Vulturine Guineafowl Project.
What projects are you currently working on at Mpala? What are your research goals?
I am working as a research assistant with the Vulturine Guinea fowl project. My research goals are centered on understanding and promoting human-wildlife coexistence while contributing to biodiversity conservation. I am particularly interested in the ecology and behavior of birds and mammals and how they interact with human dominated landscapes.
What is one of your favorite things about working at Mpala?
Before joining Mpala, i often felt out of place. My passion has always been in conversations about nature, conservation and research, and during my time at university, i longed for an environment i could thrive and connect with like minded individuals. Arriving at Mpala as an intern and engaging with experienced researchers brought me immense fulfilment, as i realized i had finally found a community where i truly belong. A space to grow as a researcher and conservationist. Working at Mpala has been especially rewarding, as the experienced researchers are not only highly knowledgeable but also generous in guiding and nurturing young scientists.
What impact do you believe your time at Mpala will have on your professional career?
Mpala has already had a profound impact on my professional journey. It has provided me with a community of researchers where i feel a true sense of belonging, while also exposing me to mentorship and collaboration with experienced scientists. Through this, i have been able to strengthen my research skills, broaden my understanding of conservation, and gain the confidence to pursue a career as both a researcher and a conservationist. I believe the experience and networks i am building at Mpala will be instrumental in shaping my future contributions to science and biodiversity conservation.
