The Uhifadhi wa Chui Leopard Conservation Program, spearheaded by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA), is a collaborative initiative dedicated to safeguarding African leopards in Kenya. Working alongside key partners such as Mpala Research Centre, Loisaba Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and the Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI), the program addresses major threats to leopards, including habitat loss, declining prey populations, and human-wildlife conflict.
A core component of the initiative is the deployment of remote trail cameras to monitor leopard populations, generating vital data to inform conservation strategies. Additionally, the program actively promotes coexistence between leopards and local communities by implementing measures to reduce livestock predation and prevent retaliatory killings.
Through cutting-edge research, community engagement, and capacity building, the Uhifadhi wa Chui program aims to secure a thriving future for leopards in Kenya’s diverse landscapes.
