Mpala is located on the Laikipia plateau in north-central Kenya, just north of the Equator, northwest of Mt. Kenya. It covers 48,000 acres of savannah and dry woodland habitats and is bordered by Ewaso Ngiro and the Ewaso Narok rivers. The land hosts Mpala Ranch and Mpala Research Centre. We seek a dynamic, committed and dedicated individual to work as a summer research assistant. This position is for one year starting April 2022.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The candidate will be responsible for overseeing on-the-ground laboratory work of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance team (SDZWA).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Enter sample information into a database, and share the database frequently back with program scientists. .
- Ensure that all laboratory equipment are properly maintained, tracked and stored.
- Assist the Program Coordinator to ensure there are enough laboratory supplies available to maintain scientific projects.
- Conduct extractions on samples received.
- Quantify DNA concentrations in samples using a fluorometer.
- Amplify target genes using PCRs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Minimum of a Diploma in molecular biology, microbiology, or related sciences.
- Statistical literacy and competence with R and/or Python/Unix/bash would be a plus.
- Experienced with working in a laboratory setting.
- Molecular biology experience working with DNA extractions and PCRs is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Display initiative, drive, honesty, integrity, and a willingness to learn.
- Proficient computer knowledge (with MS Office, especially Word and Excel) and willingness to learn more.
